There is a nifty drawbridge that rises frequently to let bigger boats through from the bay. This is a safe and entertaining way to see boats closeup - great for toddlers and kids of all ages.
Kick back and grab a refreshment at one of the local ice cream shops, go for a swim at one of the famous Gloucester beaches or just relax on a chair and gaze at the boats and the ocean. You'll have a great time!
Plus, Gloucester offers a number of interesting venues to visit including Hammond Castle or Wingaersheek Beach, one of many glorious beaches in the Gloucester area. You can also take to the seas for a fun whale watching tour. There are several to choose from - BostonCentral recommends Cape Ann Whale Watching Tours.

Quiet and fun!, Wed 20 Aug 2003
We went with our four and five-year-old for the excellent Waterfront Festival. After finally finding parking (the only part of the festival needing attention) we had an excellent time walking the 75+ booths and eating at the vendors. But the best part of Gloucester is simply itself. Up in the park, there is an excellent climbing rock (with stairs) for the kids which has an excellent view of the harbor. Walk from there down to the waterfront and see the famous statue, the bridge, and at the end you'll find the ice cream and excellent pubs. It's an easy and quiet day trip which leaves you refreshed!

On a nice day, nothing beats a trip up to Gloucester. We took our toddler and she loved watching all the big boats going under the drawbridge. (Actually, so did we!). There are cute little ice cream shops and even some small beach areas to sit on. Just walking up and down the boardwalk with the ocean breeze in your face makes the trip worthwhile. The visitors center has a clean bathroom in a pinch. Get there early so you can snag street parking.
