Tour For Summer Day Camp, Thu 1 Jul 2004
Although the tour guides were well versed in the history of the architecture of the dowtown, and they were very nice and professional, I have to admit that as a camp director I was a little disappointed in the tour. The guides did not seem to fully understand that they were giving this tour to kids! Kids (as well as most of us) are so much more excited by the 'nitty-gritty' of history, not the 'in the year 1763 ...' [As a high school history teacher I have 1st hand experience in this.] The tour should have focused on what Boston smelled like in the 1700s, what sort of events took place on the streets, and what it would have been like to be among the crowd of 'ruffians' who started the snowball fight that led to the Boston Masacre! The staff needs more than training the architectural history of the city - they need some training in educational techniques and communication with kids as well.
