Eight-thousand square feet of climbing surfaces make a place like Boulder Morty's a rarity in the Northeast, with a 40-station indoor mountain range spanning from smooth novice climb to a jagged inverted peak.

Novice climbers need to get the hange of belaying. The belayer holds the safety end of the rope and keeps the line taut enough to protect the climber from sudden drops. The $34 fee for the one-time introductary class, which includes equipment and climbing time, is a big initial investment; but once you've passed, you'll just pay for a day pass and equipment. (Kids under 12 don't need the class, they are too young to belay).

Don't worry about getting your money's worth. Kids (and parents) often want to spend the day here - even in summer, since it is air-conditioned - and everyone goes home happily worn out. As for safety concerns, you'll have to sign the requisite waiver, but the protected environment, monitored by the pros, feels very secure.

To keep things interesting, Morty's continually changes the configuration of the climbing pegs which keeps the challenge fresh.

In between ascents, take five in the upstairs loft. The tables and chairs make a perfect spot from which to marvel at some of the more experiened climbers. Crawling around the walls, they seem to defy gravity, like real-life Spidermen.

Prices:
Day Pass - $12
Equipment - $4-$6
Introductary Class - $34 (advance reservations are highly recommended)

Staff are always on hand for intro classes, but the place has become so popular that advance reservations for belaying classes - at least the day before - are now a must. You can rent shoes for $6, but a pair of your old sneakers are fine too.
