A full slate of topical animal issues presented by animal rights experts, combined with animal tricks and demonstrations, will highlight the Massachusetts School of Law’s (MSL) Fifth Annual Animal Rights Day on Saturday, April 23, 2011, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Legal issues related to animal rights and animal cruelty will be addressed by recognized legal experts in the field of animal rights law. A police dog demonstration will be presented by the Essex County (MA) Sheriff's department, while Tom Foley will provide a demonstration on Obedience Training. Kids’ activities will also be available, including an Easter Egg Hunt with the Easter Bunny, face painting, animal crafts, and Boo the Pony.

A presentation will be given by representatives of NEADS (Dogs For Deaf and Disabled Americans), of Princeton, MA, established in 1976 to train and provide independence to people who are deaf or physically disabled through the use of canine assistance. NEADS is the oldest continuing hearing dog program in the country and the only program of its kind in New England.

Humane-itarian Awards will be presented to Tim Wareham, a Newbury firefighter, and Beverly resident Kim Hyder. Wareham became a local hero for rescuing a dog that had fallen into the frigid waters off Plum Island; Hyder, an ardent animal rights activist, was arrested by police for refusing to turn over a dog she believed had been abused.

A complimentary breakfast at 8:30 a.m. will kick off the event; a complimentary lunch will also be provided.

Copies of the book, Please Can We Keep the Donkey?, written by MSL professors Diane Sullivan and Holly Vietzke, will be on sale at the event. All proceeds from book sales will benefit the Shadow Fund, established by MSL to assist animals with medical needs. The fund was the outgrowth of donations collected by the school to help a local Vietnam Veteran named Robert Burke whose dog, Shadow, required surgery which Burke was unable to afford.
