Zines are a popular alternative media used to express ideas that, often, are not published in mainstream media and are growing in significance as they are more and more being used to promote social change.
The vast world of zines covers a variety of themes including (but not limited to) the following:
- Political (feminism, class oppression, racism, homophobia, transphobia)
- Personal (anecdotes, musings)
- Artistic (poetry, photography, drawings)
- Cultural (reviews and thoughts on music, literature, etc.)
What goes into a zine is based very much on the vision of the individual creating it, so come armed with ideas and materials that you would like to incorporate into your zine!
During the first two hours of the workshop, Rani and Michelle will teach participants about:
- different kinds of zines
- the purpose behind making a zine
- the history of zines
- how to construct a zine.
After the instructional part of the workshop is complete, please feel free to hang out for an extra hour to work on your zine and collaborate with your new zine community!
Open to the community and persons of any “zine” making experience level.
We strive to cultivate a safe, brave and progressive space for our workshop attendees.

// ABOUT THE ARTIST //
Rani Gupta received her B.S.
in Journalism with a minor in Gender Studies from Boston University in 2013, and upon graduation, began working in a field other than journalism.
Thus, zines gave Rani a way to utilize her writing skills without the pressure of being creative in a fast-paced professional atmosphere.
She first saw zines when she started going to punk shows, certain bands handing out Xeroxed copies of DIY magazines covering everything from travel stories, to comics, to show photography.
Though Rani has never considered herself a “zinester,” her interest in this particular form of media has grown over the years.
Rani has written two zines, one with her friend, Michelle, who will also be instructing at this month’s Open Art Lab.
Rani and Michelle are currently working on a new zine where they will focus on their joys and pleasures as mixed race women of color.

// Materials //
A good zinester needs to be resourceful and communally minded, and since most materials can be found at home, we encourage you to bring the following supplies with you (and share with your new zinester community!):
-notebook
- paper
-old magazines/newspapers (to cut up an collage with)
-scissors
- glue sticks
-markers (or any other writing/drawing utensils)
-stapler
- personal photos, drawings, writing, etc.
- a computer is optional, but not necessary
- anything else you would like to incorporate into your zine!
We will provide paper to serve as a foundation for you to work on.
