Hours: Whenever you and your children have some downtime to read! Before bed, on the beach, in a waiting room, restaurant or in the car/plane to your summer destination! The times and locations are endless!

Reach for the Stars is a pledge-based summer reading club. The goal is to have children develop and reinforce a regular reading habit, whether they are independent readers or enjoy story time with important adults in their life. The children earn books for their personal enjoyment and experience the satisfaction of sharing books with needy children in our community. Usborne Books matches the children’s contributions of books. WOW! What a way to spend time this summer – enjoying reading, learning, and doing a great thing for others.

June 23rd - July 31st (the club is officially underway but anyone is welcome to join anytime!!)

Start reading!! Children read and collect pledges. Tell grandma & grandpa, friends, and neighbors about your reading program, and ask them to pledge a dollar amount to reward your reading. All children are asked to read (or be read to) for a minimum of 400 minutes over six weeks.

August 1st – 4th

Order books. Participating children choose reward books at the end of the program equal to the pledge money they collect. Usborne Books will match this at 25% for a book donation to Community Teamwork’s family shelters in Lowell, Mass., Milly’s Place and Merrimack House! For example, a child that collects $40 in pledges selects $40 in books for themselves AND $10 in books to be donated.

August 21st

Reading celebration! Participating children and their families are invited to a celebration at Shedd Park in Lowell, Mass. They will enjoy ice cream and receive their books, recognition, and prizes. Attending the celebration is NOT required for participation in the program.

Often times, kids lose some of the reading skills they have learned and worked hard on over the school year. It is SO important to continue reading and keeping those skills sharp! We hope we can help with that by offering this wonderful summer reading club. It will allow them to focus on a daily or weekly reading goal, earn AWESOME Usborne books in the end, and help children in local family shelters who are less fortunate than ourselves. All non-readers are welcome too! They simply need to be read toi! Reading is something we need to do with our kids every day. Why not have more fun with it??
