Summer Adventures @ Phoenix are offered at the beginning and the end of the summer. From outdoor exploration of natural habitats to the real world excitement of technology and the arts, come spend some of your summer with The Phoenix School. Summer Adventures at Phoenix is a series of week long programs held for the last two weeks in June and August.

June Programs
Fantastic Creatures of the World
Dates: June 20-24, 2011
Ages: 6-11
Instructor: Will Sargent
As a member of the Phoenix Fantastic Creatures Research Team, investigate various animals of today and their habits throughout the world. Invent creatures who can survive in habitats of the future. Use technology, art materials, and outdoor sites for your research and inventions. Produce a documentary film or book to teach others about a creature they have never seen before.

Sports Fan Time Travel
Dates: June 27-July 1, 2011
Ages: 6-11
Instructor: Will Sargent
Step into your imagination and travel back in time to explore sports of the past and future. Maybe we’ll visit Hogwarts to play Quidditch, or join the ancient Greeks to take part in the Olympic games, or land in the Middle Ages to take part in all the festivities of the medieval fair. Make costumes, props, and whatever equipment is needed. Film each adventure and learn how to turn your images into an iMovie to take home on a disk.

August Programs
Bug World
Dates: August 22-26, 2011
Ages: 6-11
Instructor: Mike Smith
Bugs are amazing and, of course, everywhere. Take a close-up look into the likes of insects and their cousins through experiments, exploration, and microscopes. Search for a variety of bugs on land, in the water, and even underground. Do a bug dissection. Spend time at Winter Island, the Salem Conservation Land, and the Lynn Woods as you explore the world of insects.

Full STEAM Ahead
Dates: August 22-26, 2011
Ages: 7-11
Instructors: Barbara McFall, Betsye Sargent
Inventors and engineers wanted to explore the mystery of motion. In the spirit of Sir Isaac Newton and his famous laws we will invent various contraptions that will illustrate how motion works. Use materials to create moving models and Lego Robotics and/or Pico Cricket to program your “moves.”

Going Green
Dates: August 29-Sept. 2, 2011
Ages: 6-11
Instructor: Mike Smith
What can you do to help protect our environment and animal populations? Come find out by exploring different conservation methods and learning about our local watershed. Design your own environmental project in the local community, looking closely at how your actions affect the environment everyday. Have fun with environmentally friendly activities such as: working with a team to build a personal-sized raft out of reusable items, hiking, and tide-pooling.

Lights, Camera, Action
Dates: August 29-Sept. 2, 2011
Ages: 7-11
Instructors: Barbara McFall, Betsye Sargent
Phoenix Productions is looking for a film crew to produce a series of short iMovies. Play the various roles: producer, actor, set designer, prop-maker, editor, animator, etc. as we create clay animation and live action mini-films based on original stories. End the week with an iMovie to take home.

Teen Leadership Program
Dates: June 20 to 24, June 27 to July 1, August 22 to 26, August 29 to Sept. 2

Ages: 12–14

Hours: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
Fee: $100 per week

The Teen Leadership Program (TLC) is for young people who are too old for formal summer programs, too young for a formal job, but interested in spending a week assisting our course teachers in the field or engineering/inventions, mentoring younger children, helping out with the activities for the day, supervising recess or play at the park. TLCs will be given special assignments by their directing teacher and be responsible for various odd jobs that make the course run smoothly. Interest in science, animals, or the environment or expertise in LEGO Robotics a plus.

TLCs should have had previous experience working successfully with younger children, be able to work as a member of a team, and have a basic understanding of how children learn through active exploration. 1-2 applicants will be accepted for each course.

Along with their Registration Form, interested TLC applicants should send a list of their experiences working with young children and a letter that explains their interest in the program. On your Registration Form rank the courses in order of preference and submit your application by June 2nd. You will then be invited for an interview and further clarification of our expectations.

Accepted applicants will meet with the course teacher before each session begins. They will work closely with course teachers and be given feedback on their performance. A final evaluation will be written that may be used as a recommendation for future summer employment with young children.
