Secrets of Circles: EcoTariumCut them through the center, and each one has a circle inside! Uncover the math, science and beauty of the circles all around us in the EcoTarium's latest exhibit.

What makes a circle the best shape for pizza-- and car wheels? Why are bubbles and the sun and the iris of your eye all circles? So simple, and yet so powerful, the shape of a circle is found in nature and used by people throughout time and across cultures. Why?

In this exhibit specially created for kids ages 3-10, families can investigate the puzzle of circles around us in many ways-- and in three different languages (English, Spanish and Vietnamese)!

  • Look for circles in a colorful international pretend marketplace-- in the fruit they 'purchase', in the shape of the Vietnamese boat they paddle, in the umbrellas and hats that provide shelter
  • Draw a perfect circle that glows in the dark using mathematical techniques
  • Place reflective shapes on a large turntable and set it spinning to see the patterns that result
  • Build gear contraptions and put those circles to work turning the hands of a clock, a music box ballerina and a drill
  • Touch a wand to the surface of a digital pond and watch circles ripple outward and stir up beautiful dragonflies that swirl and colorful flowers that grow in rings.
  • Step inside and see what it takes to turn a heavy Giant Tire from an actual truck.
  • Try to draw a circle with a computerized version of Etch-a-Sketch® that has pendulums attached to the knobs
  • Use muscles to figure out which is easier to move: a cinder block on a cart with wheels or a cinder block on a cart without wheels

And much more.....
