hibori is a 1400 year old Japanese dyeing process wherein cloth is manipulated before dyeing, by stitching, folding, wrapping or pleating, and bound by tying or clamping. Creases and folds of the tightly bound fabric resist the dyes resulting in amazingly beautiful patterns.

You can view Carter Smith: Shibori Treasures on exhibit at Fuller Craft Museum January 20 thru March 6, 2007. In this workshop, each student will be provided with a few yards of fabric to create a Shibori sampler. You may bring along a piece of natural fiber clothing that needs to be re-invented as well!

Take this opportunity to 'try out' this ancient Japanese craft and see if you might be compelled to take our upcoming all day workshop with Carter Smith on March 17. You might even decide to register for the 3 day workshop with yet another master Shibori artist, Joan Morris beginning April 27. To learn more about this fasinating art attend OBJECTively Speaking with Carter Smith on Feb 11 at 2pm (free with museum admission).
