The Sports Museum at the TD Garden is proud to announce that it has unveiled a prominent new exhibit, Headlines and Color Lines: Celebrating the Heritage of The Negro Leagues.

The exhibit, which is presented by The Boston Foundation and John Hancock, is debuting this month congruent with the celebration of February’s Black History Month. The display will allow younger generations to learn, appreciate and celebrate this rich heritage and legacy of the Negro Leagues.

For the first half of the 20th Century, the Negro Leagues served as the haven for Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and other legendary African American players who were unfairly shut out of the major leagues. While the conditions weren’t always ideal, the level of play was high. For those in the African American community, the great Negro Leagues teams and players became a tremendous source of pride. The Negro Leagues also played a key cultural and social function, serving as a place of community gathering for African Americans in cities throughout the nation, including Boston.

This all-new Sports Museum exhibit located on Level 5 of the TD Garden showcases and documents the key figures, teams, and moments that marked the Negro Leagues history.

Exhibit highlights include:

· Locker displays showcasing eight legendary Negro League teams (the Kansas City Monarchs, Chicago American Giants, New York Cuban Giants, Homestead Grays, Detroit Stars, Indianapolis Clowns, the Ethiopians, and the Bachrach Giants of Atlantic City), with each locker including a complete replica uniform along with photographs of notable players from that team;

· A display case honoring Will “Cannonball” Jackman, a legendary Negro League pitcher who hailed from Boston; and

· The classic Negro League photographs of noted civil rights photographer Ernest Withers.

Youth groups affiliated with presenting sponsors The Boston Foundation and John Hancock will be visiting the museum in the upcoming months, free of charge, to experience the Negro League exhibit as well as the other exhibits on display which celebrate the character and characters of Boston sports.

The Sports Museum is open each and every day (Saturdays and Sundays included) from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM except for the following days when we are closed due to TD Garden events and holidays:

Visitors may purchase admission tickets at the TD Garden Box Office, located on the west side of the North Station platform, next to the Boston Bruins Proshop. If the Garden Box Office is closed, you can purchase tickets in the Proshop. The Museum's entrance is located at The Premium Club's private entrance also located on the west side.
