Every year our local green spaces fill up with all kinds of wonderful caterpillars. Their shared goals are to eat, grow, and avoid being gobbled up by an army of hungry birds and insects. If they're lucky, caterpillars eventually turn into butterflies or moths; It is hard work growing up, and they must use many surprising tricks and strange costumes just to stay alive.
Follow a caterpillar in a New England forest and you'll learn a lot about nature. Jaffe searches for caterpillars every year in local fields and forests and raises them in his living room.
As they grow, he photographs them and takes notes, and then releases them back into the wild. These photographs are some of his favorites from right here in the Boston area.
This exhibit contains bold, large images, descriptive text, biological and natural history keywords, exhibit panels describing rearing and photography methods.
Six large-scale, live animal events over the summer will focus on close, hands on interactions between children and live caterpillars, pupae, and moths allowing families who show particular interest to follow up their Museum visit with a more intense caterpillar experience.
