Impressionism from the Cape School of Art

January 17 - February 28, 2015
Reception January 24 from 2 to 4 PM
(Snow Date January 25)

The Brush Art Gallery and Studios presents six artists that have carried on the tradition of Provincetown Impressionism: John Clayton, Robert Louis Del Russo, Arthur Egeli, Rob Longley, Dennis Lucas, and Margaret McWethy.

The exhibit is titled “Impressionism from the Cape School of Art.”

The Cape School of Art has a long history of teaching a method of plein air painting where students learn to see color in its purest forms and paint the illusion of light.

The technique was first introduced to Provincetown at the turn of the twentieth century by Charles Webster Hawthorne, who at one point was an assistant to instructor William Merritt Chase, another well-known American Impressionist.

Henry Hensch, who learned from Hawthorne, ran the Cape School of Art for over fifty years and taught his technique to countless students.

Now, we are lucky to have a group of artists that preserve this tradition, exhibiting in Lowell.

Visit “The Brush” during the cold winter months of January and February.

Impressionistic paintings from Cape School artists will give you a dose of sunshine.
