Sky, sea, and land have long served as alluring subjects for artists who wish to challenge themselves with fleeting effects of atmosphere, light, and motion: churning rapids, wind-blown trees, dark thunderheads, gossamer mists.

Nineteenth-century artists often depicted a nature either harmoniously idyllic or terrifyingly awesome—sometimes both at once.

While many of the works in this exhibition present the landscape as a kind of fantasy, others explore the ways in which artists—both past and present—have expressed their wonder at nature’s invisible or intangible properties, as well as exercised their imaginations to depict the unknown.
