While romantic Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages when lovers said or sang their valentine verses, today we are most familiar with the pretty paper variety. Each February, the National Heritage Museum presents a selection of antique Valentines from its collection in the Van Gorden-Williams Library.
Now through February 29, 25 antique valentine greeting cards celebrate romance with charming images of courting couples, cupids, and children sprouting from flowers. The types of valentines, all dating from 1910-1920, include honeycomb, pull-down, mechanical, postcard, and handmade.
