In the newly renovated Mugar Omni Theater, the world's largest film format is projected onto a five-story-tall IMAX® Dome screen. It wraps audiences in larger-than-life images of flora, fauna, and faraway places. A state-of-the-art digital sound system completes the immersion effect.
Brief History
In 1987, the Mugar Omni Theater became the first large-format theater in Boston, and since then more than 15 million visitors have immersed themselves in far-flung adventures through its five story wraparound screen.
Over the years, the Museum has kept the popular venue updated with high-tech image and sound technologies. Today, it is still the only 180-degree IMAX Doma theater in New England, but it faces competition from recently constructed flat-screen IMAX theaters.
Enhancements
The new 'premium seam dome' consists of 394 panels that snap together with fewer seams, making the theatergoers' immersion experience even more realistic. The original lighting will be replaced with an LED system, which will last longer and call up more colors. A digital video projection system now enables live feeds such as televised events and PowerPoint presentations. Finally, updated lighting and reflective strips on the stairs now guide visitors over new carpeting.
