“Running was one of the delights of my early days …” So said Louisa May Alcott, famed author and real-life “Jo March” of the beloved book, Little Women, written in 1868 her Concord, MA home, Orchard House.

Miss Alcott loved to walk and run long before their current popularity. This fundraiser highlights her trailblazing spirit, reminding us that the real Alcott story is richer than any fiction. It is also a chance for the community-at-large to enjoy a fun day and help a good cause. All are welcome.

At 12 noon on Sunday, October 22, 2006 at Concord-Carlisle High School (500 Walden Street, Route 126, just off Route 2), 5K Walk/10K Run registants will traverse Historic Concord during beautiful Fall Foliage season. One of Concord’s most famous literary landmarks, Orchard House is a real pilgrimage site for tens of thousands of visitors annually. All proceeds go to benefit historic preservation and educational programming at Orchard House.

Music will be provided by the acclaimed “Yankee Stompers,' and the event will get off to a rousing start by a musket volley courtesy of The Concord Minute Men. T-shirts will be given to the first 300 registrants, and special prizes awarded to the ten registrants who raise the most in Sponsorships. 19th Century games and toys, Living History characters, and post-event refreshments, including ice cream, will top off the day.

Prior to October 12th, Walkers and other non-runners can participate for only $5, while Runners are $20 ($10 and $25 respectively after October 12th). Participants are encouraged to get as many Sponsors as possible; non-participants may even sponsor “Louisa” herself! For Registration and Sponsorship materials, maps/directions, or other details, visit www.louisamayalcott.org, e-mail walkrun@louisamayalcott.org, or phone 978.369.4118.
