This weekend (June 7th and 8th), the not-for-profit organization Alex’s Lemonade Stand (which was started by a four-year old girl with Neuroblastoma, a largely terminal type of pediatric cancer) is holding its annual “Lemonade Days” fundraising event. Nolan (he's 4 1/2) is holding his second annual stand in our driveway; we do this in memory of our friend Cian Crowley who passed away at 7-months of age from the same cancer as Alex.
Cian’s death has continued to have a profound effect on so many people – our family included. When Cian passed away, we struggled with how to share that information with Nolan (Cian was the first baby Nolan had ever held). Just after Cian died, his mother sent out a message saying that having Cian was the best thing that ever happened to her and her husband. She added that she wanted Cian’s friends to remember that life is meant to be lived – Nolan has really taken the message to heart. His stand is an important part of remembering Cian, living in the moment and trying to help fight childhood cancer.
