During February School Vacation Week, (Tuesday, February 20-Thursday, February 23, 2007), (ongoing throughout the day) come visit the Hull Lifesaving Museum to learn the wonderful true story of Abbie Burgess, Keeper of Matinicus Rock Lighthouse, Maine.

In the winter of 1856, Abbie’s father went ashore for supplies, only to be trapped on the mainland for four weeks by a coastal storm. Abbie, then only seventeen, kept the lights burning despite knee-deep flooding and wild seas, all the while caring for her sick mother and her younger sisters. Families are invited to watch “Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie,” browse our many lighthouse children’s books, check out the museum’s lighthouse models, and make their own Paper Lighthouse Models to take home.

While at the museum families can also explore exhibits on shipwrecks and lifesaving, as well as our special exhibit, “Flying Santa: A Holiday Tradition,” and visit the children’s loft, complete with dress-up costumes and a climb-on play ship. Activity is free with museum admission.

For more information, please contact Victoria Stevens at 781-925-5433 or lifesavingmuseum@comcast.net. The museum is located in the historic 1889 Point Allerton U.S. Lifesaving Station at 1117 Nantasket Avenue, Hull, MA, www.lifesavingmuseum.org.
