Meet the instructors, learn about private/semi-private and beginner group lessons offered in piano, guitar, cello, flute, trumpet/brass and more. Instruction available in English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, Spanish, Dutch, Armenian, Indonesian, French.

Reknown pianist and Braintree resident Ellyses Kuan is passionate about music and wants to share her appreciation with students.

This September, Ellyses will open EKS Music School in Quincy, offering private, group and introductory music lessons in piano, guitar, violin, flute, cello, trumpet and more.

The Hong Kong native has taken piano lessons since age three, partly because of her parents’ guidance, but more because of her fascination with the rhythm and beauty of composition of various musical styles.

She had the good fortune of training with the highest caliber instructors in Hong Kong and performing around the world.

When creating her school, her experiences as a student and performer led her to focus on two critical elements: having the highest quality teachers and making the school truly a community.

She explains, “When I was young, I had wonderful instructors, but rarely had contact or interaction with other students.

It was lonely sometimes.

I want my school to promote collaboration among the students, with duets, regular performances with feedback from the teachers.”

The EKS Music School’s offerings reflect Ellyses’ vision, with STEP Group Classes to introduce new students to a particular instrument with a proper Start of understanding the basics, guided Training with qualified teachers, learning to Enjoy and appreciate music, and Performance with other students to demonstrate mastery of an instrument.

“I’m excited about our STEP curriculum.

It’s very structured and designed to foster a love and appreciation of music for each student.

They get to explore music in a small group setting, with games and activities designed to increase their cognizance of tempo, note reading, proper posture, daily practice: all the good habits that make a musician successful.” The school also offers private and semi-private lessons, customized to match the learning style and goals of each student.

Ellyses believes that public performance represents a critical part of the development of a musician.

“We offer a Studio Performance Class on a monthly basis.

Any student of our students can sign up with his or her instrument to perform.

It’s a free program, where the kids play for each other, or work on a piece together, while the teachers provide feedback.

It allows students in the audience to appreciate the effort of their peers, while the performers grow as musicians.

Building in performance as a regular feature of the musical development of our students was important to me.”

All of the instructors at EKS Music School have masters’ degrees in music as well as strong performance backgrounds.

“We are equipped to prepare students to go to a conservatory.

We also have connections for those who want to participate in music festivals.

We want to share our expertise to inspire and prepare the next generation of musicians.”

EKS Music School, located at 121b Standish Avenue (just off Hancock Street by Veterans Stadium) in Quincy will host an open house the week of September 3rd – 5th from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM each day.
