As part of ArtweekBoston, the State Library's Special Collections Department will show treasures relating to Massachusetts history, with hands-on activities for children aged six to ten.

Visitors will see samples of early documents that are normally kept in a secure storage area, including maps of Massachusetts towns shown from the point of view of a bird flying over the town, letters written with quill pens in the 1700’s, books of Native American laws printed in the Cherokee and Creek languages.

Visitors will have a chance to decipher old handwriting, and to fold a letter and seal it for mailing without an envelope.

Note: parents or other adults who accompany the children are welcome to watch the presentation.

(For adults, see the tour from 1-2pm.)

LOCATION↑ top

State House Rm 55, 24 Beacon Street, Boston, MA, 02133 map
Phone: 617-727-2595

The State Library’s Special Collections Department is in Room 55 of the State House. (Please note: the Main Library is Room 341; Special
Collections is in a different physical location within the State House.)
Easiest way to get there is to come in the main entrance of the State House–called the Hooker Entrance because of the large equestrian statue out front of General Hooker–which is right across Beacon Street from where Park Street comes up from the Park Street T stop. It is about a 3-minute walk up Park Street from the T stop.
Come in the Hooker entrance and go through security (metal detector, bags and parcels through a scanner), then head left across the first floor to the West Wing of the building. At the end of the West Wing hallway, walk down one flight of stairs, or, take the elevator one level down to the Basement. You will see the door to Special Collections (Room 55) there.
