Kerstin Forsberg will discuss her work to protect mantas amid unregulated fisheries, and how eco-tourism can be used as a solution: Aquarium Lecture Series at the New England Aquarium Oct 5.

Peru is home to the largest-known population of manta rays in the world.

Giant oceanic manta rays are spectacular in their beauty and stunning in size, measuring up to 23 feet across their gills.

But, like other large marine mammals, they are have been threatened by commercial fishing interests.

Their gills and meat are highly sought after in many markets.

In Asia, the gill plates are sold as a health tonic.

Many species also become accidentally entangled in fishing line, nets, and gear, causing threatened species even more harm.

WHO: Kerstin Forsberg is founder and director of Planeta Oceano, a community-based conservation organization that has been researching and advocating for manta ray conservation for many years.

She was successful this year in leading the Peruvian government to offer full legal protection for manta rays by prohibiting manta fishing in Peru and requiring that any mantas, caught as bycatch, be released back into the ocean.

A social entrepreneur and biologist, Forsberg is the recipient of the New England Aquarium’s Marine Conservation Action Fund (MCAF) which gives small grants to researchers, conservationists, and grassroots organizations that are working to protect the oceans and marine life around the world.

She has been successful in leading numerous community conservation projects, involving hundreds of citizen scientists and others.

She has contributed to many scientific publications and biodiversity policy initiatives in Peru.

A sought-after speaker, she has also been named a top “30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneur” by Forbes Magazine.

She received the World Wildlife Federation’s International President’s Award, an Ashoka Fellowship, the Peruvian National Environmental Citizenship Award, and the International Youth Foundation’s Fellowship.

WHEN: Forberg’s lecture, “Pioneering Manta Ray and Community-Based Conservation in Peru,” will be held Wednesday, Oct.

5 at 7 p.m.
