When the calendar page turns to February, Mistral audiences have long come to anticipate a concert where, along with chocolate hearts, they are treated to music that takes its inspiration from love and romance.

This year, the annual Valentine concert offers up a potpourri entitled “From Russia with Love.”

A week before Valentine’s Day Mistral welcomes the return of Russian artists Tamara Volskaya and Anatoliy Trofimov, the widely-acclaimed husband and wife duo who perform all over the world on the domra and bayan, authentic Russian instruments similar to the balaleika and accordion.

Together they comprise one of the most remarkable and inspiring musical duos to be found anywhere in the world.

Winners of international and national competitions, they have toured throughout Russia, Europe, Canada, Australia, and Japan.

They will perform beautiful love ballads and other poignant works, many based on Russian folk music.

Sharing the program will be an ensemble of distinguished Mistral artists, including dynamic Boston Symphony violinist Julianne Lee, New York cellist Adrian Daurov (originally from St Petersburg, Russia), and award–winning pianist Ya Fei Chuang in a performance of the beautiful Arensky Piano Trio, a Russian master from the Romantic Era.

Flutist and artistic director Julie Scolnik has been on a mission for years to expand the flute repertoire and Mistral audiences have heard many transcriptions with Scolnik’s flute in place of a violin.

This time she will perform a set of Russian miniatures originally violin and piano by Russian composers who were biographically linked to Arensky: Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise, Tchaikovsky’s Serenade Melancholique, and Prokofiev’s Waltz from the ballet Cinderella.

Scolnik remarked, “Our Valentine concert has always been one of our most popular.

January can seem long and bleak after the holidays, and people crave the warmth of beautiful chamber works to get them through a long cold New England winter.”
If Music be the Food of Love, play on!
