Guitarists Jamie Balmer and Joseph Ricker celebrate the release of their album, 'Guitar Nouveau,' playing classical music on vintage electric guitars. They bring their unique sound to Amazing Things Arts Center on May 30.

2015 marks the 10-year anniversary of Duo Orfeo.

Since meeting in 2005, guitarists Jamie Balmer and Joseph Ricker have forged a unique path in the classical music world, recording and touring throughout the U.S. on both classical guitars and vintage electric guitars.

April 15th saw the release of their fourth album, 'Guitar Nouveau,' featuring music by Machaut, Byrd, Bach, Duphly, Chopin, Janáček, Fauré, and Prokofiev, as well as world premiers by Ricker and Thomas Schuttenhelm - all played on electric guitars through vintage tube amplifiers.

Duo Orfeo's Boston-area CD Release Concert will be at Amazing Things Arts Center in Framingham on May 30.

'Guitar Nouveau' expands on the project begun with their critically acclaimed electric guitar debut album, 2012's 'I sing the body electric.' That earlier album 'focused in on a particular thread in modern classical music, from Erik Satie to Arvo Pärt,' says Ricker.

'Our experiment was about the conviction that the electric guitar could basically be used in the same way that classical musicians have used other more traditional instruments.

That is to say we believed that by subtly seeking out all the beautiful tones the instrument is capable of, the electric guitar could be a legitimate mouthpiece for interpreting great works of classical music.'
Adds Balmer, 'On 'Guitar Nouveau,' we're following that conviction where it leads.

What's expanded is the range of musical periods, genres, styles, and moods that we've been able to bring to life with vintage electric guitars.'
The expanded musical range of 'Guitar Nouveau' encompasses works from all but one of the last six centuries.

Many of these are sure to be on the program at Duo Orfeo's May 30th concert.
