The Splinters are a fairly new band having only formed back in 2010, whose focus is mainly on old-time bluegrass and country music.
J. Johnson and Chris Reckling are at the heart of the music, with Laurie Peckins being a recent addition to occasional performances.
J.Johnson, on mandolin and vocals, attended Berklee where he met Chris and they lived together as roommates in Mission Hill.
While at Berklee, J. studied jazz and keyboards and played in a punk/new wave band. Chris brings his talent to the guitar and vocals. He studied with J. at Berklee.
Prior to that, Chris had been playing folk and studied the finger-picking traditions of John Renbourn.
Laurie has studied at Franconia College, Berklee, and Boston Conservatory.
She spent many years playing in a bluegrass band, Foxfire, before teaching at Wellesley Public Schools.
Alongside her teaching career, she played classical violin in orchestras and chamber groups throughout the area.
The band’s influences are mainly bluegrass and newgrass, with a hint of rock and jazz.
While some inspiration comes from artists including David Grisman, Tony Rice, and Norman Blake, there is always help from the traditional bluegrass groups including Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, Doc Watson, and more.
The band considers The Nitty Gritty Dirt band album Will the Circle be Unbroken to be a huge influence on their work.
They enjoy taking traditional old songs and putting their own spin on them.
