Harpsichordist Andrus Madsen will perform music by Purcell, Croft, and Draghi, some of which may well have been played in the Old State House during the early years of the 18th century. After the Glorious Revolution restored the British monarchy, musical culture in London flourished, and not only in domestic circles—some of the earliest known public concerts also were taking place at this time. The harpsichord was at the very center of this thriving scene, both as a solo instrument and as the foundation for ensembles large and small.
This summer, the Old State House will come to life with live performances of 18th century music. This series of three concerts, presented by The Bostonian Society in partnership with Newton Baroque, will offer music that was popular in Boston and may have been played in the Old State House during the colonial period. Newton Baroque director Andrus Madsen will provide commentary throughout the concerts to place the music in historical context.
