New England Wild Flower Society offers its Fall Family Festival on Sunday, October 17. This is close to the end of the season at Garden in the Woods (closing October 31) and fall foliage colors are normally at their peak. The Garden is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and special events are scheduled from noon to 4 p.m.
Our new fall scavenger hunt invites participants to discover the colors, smells, and sights throughout the Garden. Stop by the Lily Pond and look for frogs, turtles, dragonflies, and more. Find a leaf that is bigger than your hand. Where is a leaf with a skeleton showing through? Can you find a leaf with three colors?
Volunteers will be on hand to help visitors of all ages to create a leaf rubbing. With so many leaf shapes available, each design should be very different. Visitors can also make a mini-dish garden to take home and enjoy over the winter months.
Check out the brightly colored berries and other fruits on trees, shrubs, and smaller plants. Birds and other smaller animals need nourishment during the fall and winter. The bright reds and orange berries attract a number of animals which are fun to watch as they discover and feast on these fall treats.
Look for costumed characters in the Garden. They have stories to tell. Did that tree really walk down that path? Was it really talking to that group of people by the Idea Garden?
Stroll the Garden. Linger at the Lily Pond to see and photograph the reflection of oaks in the water; the many berries still clinging to the shrubs along the banks of the pond; and a significant number of frogs and turtles still lazily sunning themselves in the water, on lily pads, or on floating islands.
Bring a picnic and enjoy it on one of our many picnic tables in the picnic area.
Regular admission pricing is in effect for the Fall Family Festival. Adult admission is $8; seniors and students with identification $6; and youths 3-18 $4. Parking is free. Bring a picnic and enjoy it on the patio outside the Education Building. Coffee, waters, and snacks are available in the Garden Shop, where you can also purchase gardening books, eco-friendly gifts, tools, games, and more.
Don’t forget your camera!

- All purchases support conservation. This is a great place to have a conversation about the environment with the whole family. Why are native plants important? Don't forget to look for the 'invasive plant jail' Why don't we want to let them out?
