A healthy FUNdraiser in support of educational programming and historic preservation efforts at the beloved 'Home of Little Women' -- Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House -- in Concord, MA.

All manner of runners and walkers -- from serious marathoners to strollercisers and wheelchair travelers -- are encouraged to “spend the day with Louisa May” and help support education programs and preservation efforts at Orchard House during this FUNdraiser.

Over 125 years ago, Louisa May Alcott wrote, “Running was one of the delights of my early days,” proving once again that she and her family were ahead of their time in advocating a healthy lifestyle.

For the 8th Annual Benefit Walk/Run, Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House, “Home of Little Women,” is again privileged to announce that Uta Pippig -- three-time Boston Marathon winner, two-time Olympian, and internationally-recognized exercise motivator -- is serving as Honorary Chair.

Pippig, founder of “Take the Magic Step,” a fitness awareness program and charitable foundation, believes that everyone owes it to themselves and to future generations to take care of their physical well-being.

In endorsing this particular Walk/Run, Pippig, a part-time Concord resident, also pays tribute to health-conscious individuals who have come before us, like the Alcotts: “Once again, I’m delighted to be Honorary Chair of the Louisa May Alcott Walk/Run, and especially this year because Orchard House celebrates 100 years of being open to the public as a museum,” Pippig recently said.

“It’s also still so amazing to me that Louisa loved to travel such long distances by foot, walking 20 miles from Concord to Boston in a day and thinking nothing of it! The Alcotts’ progressive beliefs, especially with regard to the vital importance of exercise, are what captured Pippig’s attention. “Louisa and her Little Women counterpart, ‘Jo March,’ certainly are terrific role models for strong, independent women and great inspirations for physical fitness. Good luck to everyone on September 16th!”

A flat, easy, well-marked course, professional timing results, ample water stations, and awards are available for registered runners. Lively music will be graciously provided by “The Yankee Stompers,” while the stirring starting volley will be done by The Concord Minute Men. Living History portrayers, 19th Century games and toys, and healthy snacks will also be available.

This major fundraising event for Orchard House will be held rain or shine. Pre-registration is preferred, but on-site registration begins at 10:30 am at Concord-Carlisle High School, 500 Walden Street; the Walk/Run steps-off at noon. Both the walk and run routes traverse Historic Concord during the lovely early Fall, and all proceeds support one of America’s most beloved historic sites.

Secure on-line registration is available at active.com. To download Registration and Sponsorship forms, please visit www.louisamayalcott.org, e-mail [email protected], or phone 978.369.4118 x104.
