High-flying family entertainment is in store when Chitty Chitty Bang Bang lands at Andover High School. A wonderful cast of over 40 very talented students bring this beloved show to life this weekend.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang tells the tale of inventor Caractacus Potts, brought to life by Alex Hanscom, and his father Grandpa Potts, portrayed by Adam Weber, who buys and renovates an old racing car only to discover it possesses amazing powers and a mind of its own.

Potts and his children, Jeremy and Jemima, joined by the beautiful Miss Truly Scrumptious, played by Maci Letsky, embark on a series of amazing magical, musical adventures.

This 2005 Tony-nominated Broadway musical is an adaptation of the 1968 film starring Dick Van Dyke, and featuring the magical music of the Sherman Brothers, Walt Disney’s prolific writing team responsible for more motion-picture musical song scores than any other songwriting team in film history.

Scores include Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, Charlotte's Web and The Aristocats.

A wonderful cast of over 40 very talented students bring this show to life under the direction of Ms. Susan Choquette.

A number of the cast are from Andover middle and elementary schools, including the lead roles of Jeremy and Jemima Potts.

These roles are double cast by four fabulous young talents, Jeremy alternately being played by Somin Virmani or Andrew Jones, and Jemima by Zoe Saum or Brita Martin.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang began as a children’s book, written by James Bond author Ian Fleming for his son Caspar in 1964.

The 1968 musical film was produced by Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, the producer of the 007 films.

Broccoli cast two actors from the Bond films, Desmond Llewelyn (the famous spy gadget maker “Q”) and Gert Frobe (the villain Goldfinger) as the Baron.

The film loosely adapted the characters with a screenplay by Ronald Dahl and Ken Hughes.

Truly Scrumptious was not in Fleming’s book, but was designed to be a vehicle for Julie Andrews to re-pair her with Dick van Dyke.

Unfortunately she refused the role as she felt it was too close to Mary Poppins.

Van Dyke became available only after refusing the role of Fagin in what became 1968’s Best Picture Oscar for OLIVER!, leaving that role deservedly to Ron Moody, the actor who originated Fagin on stage.
