Stoneham Theatre continues Season 16 with Lucia Frangione’s holiday celebration, Christmas on the Air, directed by Shana Gozansky. Performances run from November 27 – December 27, 2015. Press Opening is Saturday, November 28, 2015 at 7:00pm.

Journey back to 1949 when radio was king, as radio hosts Yolanda and Percival B. Frank present their annual Christmas show before a “live studio audience.” Audiences will experience the on-air magic and get a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes shenanigans.

The audience is an integral part of the show! You're not just there to watch.

We need you to be part of the live audience attending a live radio show.

You need to applaud and ooh and aah when asked!

Also, the show really is a wonderful collection of songs and stories -- some very familiar and some rare treasures that take us on the full range of holiday experiences,” shared Director Shana Gozansky.

Songs include: O Christmas Tree, Jingle Bells, Let it Snow!, Blue Christmas, Deck the Halls, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, O Holy Night, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, and more.

We’re always looking for something for the holidays that is a little bit off-the-beaten-path but will still appeal to the whole family.

The radio show format is so much fun to create on stage.

There’s a foley (live sound effects) section of the show that audiences won’t want to miss,” notes Producing Artistic Director Weylin Symes.

The Christmas on the Air cast includes many beloved local actors: Margaret Ann Brady*, William Gardiner* (back for his eighth Stoneham Theatre holiday production), Mark Linehan*, and Meredith Stypinski*.

Cast member Meryl Galaid plays the piano throughout the show.

Not only is Christmas on the Air new to Boston audiences, what also sets this show apart from other local holiday offerings is its local flavor.

“We’ve been given permission by the author to customize the show to include references to the Boston area circa 1949,” says Symes.

The show was originally set in Canada, but we have relocated the Frank family to the Boston area, with help from Dramaturg and Education Manager Dori Robinson.

Expect to hear about Jordan Marsh’s flagship store, their Enchanted Village (with the lavish window displays), and their sugar-crusted blueberry muffin, as well as time-honored traditions like grabbing dessert at Woolworth’s.
