Born from tidal marshes and mudflats, the Boston Embankment provides the city with recreation and outstanding scenery. First used around 1910, the term “Esplanade” is the popular name for the parkland, stemming from the French word for “promenade along the shore.”
This picturesque tour explores the creation and evolution of the Esplanade, including its landscaping, architecture, and use for sports, and as a haven for wildlife and venue for the performing arts.
