On Friday, November 28 at 7pm, Gore Place, the historic Governor Gore estate in Waltham, Massachusetts, will offer a special evening tour entitled, Not Another Bite! Wined & Dined in 1809. If you think you had a big meal on Thanksgiving Day, just wait until you see how people entertained in the time of Christopher and Rebecca Gore!
In the early 1800s, dinner parties provided an opportunity to “wow” guests with bountiful food and plentiful drink. Dining tables, serving tables and sideboards were laden with food, the room darkened and the candles lit before guests were ushered in. The dinner, which lasted for hours, consisted of many courses including the highly anticipated piece de resistance, the principal dish of the meal. Led by a guide in period dress, visitors will tour this beautiful 1806 mansion and hear stories of sumptuous dining and gracious entertainment in the early 1800s.
The early 1800s estate of Massachusetts Governor Christopher Gore includes a small farm with sheep, goats and poultry. With its spiral staircase, marble floors and oval rooms, the elegantly furnished mansion has been called “the Monticello of the North” and architectural historians consider it to be the most significant Federal period mansion in New England.
