The Purple Onion serves 'innovative, tasty food that is a departure from everyday fare.' Every order is made-to-order (though ready surprisingly quickly!) and is prepared without deep-frying or adding any unnecessary fats. Its location and extended summer hours guarantee that you can have a fresh, healthy meal almost anytime you're out and about in Newburyport. Dine inside, take your meal to one of several outdoor cafe tables, or get it 'to go' and enjoy it across the street while your children play at the Inn Street playground!
The menu at the Purple Onion is quite extensive. They are known for their sweet n' sour tomato soup, and a seasonal soup of the day is always offered as well. For a light lunch, salads and quiche are available and range in price from $5-10. Hot and cold wraps, sandwiches, and 'bowls' (usually rice, vegetable and cheese dishes served with a choice of meats) can be purchased for $6-12. Burritos and quesadillas are also available (for $7-10 each), with sides such as homemade salsa, guacamole, refried beans and tortilla chips ranging in price from $.50-6.50.
The kids' menu is small but well-rounded, though many of the adult-sized entrees could suit a child's appetite. A PB&J wrap, Fluffernutter wrap, small cheese quesadilla, or 'Lil' Chicken Bowl' can be had for $3.75-6.75. Juice boxes, bottled water, sodas, teas and coffee are available, and homemade desserts (including Rice Krispie treats) round out the Purple Onion's menu. The Purple Onion is located on Inn Street in downtown Newburyport. It is not directly accessible by car, but the municipal parking lot is just a few steps from the Inn Street Plaza.
If you happen to be walking through Newburyport, Inn Street can be accessed from Pleasant Street or Market Square.
