Modern PastryLocated in downtown Amesbury, Hippie Chick Bakery offers a wide assortment of cakes, cookies, muffins, breads and pastries, made from “the finest quality ingredients, organic and locally grown if possible.”
On a table against the wall you’ll find four or five different types of coffee (available hot or iced), a cooler of juices and water, and boxes of herbal and flavored teas. There is a lot to choose from in this bakery, which is a good thing—unless you were planning to bring your kids.

- This is a great place to go to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee (or tea, or juice, or water) and a snack. The use of organic, fresh ingredients makes it a slightly-less-guilty indulgence. But leave the kids at home if you really want to relax -- and bring home some treats for them instead.
Simply Amazing CakesFYI - The bakery recently moved, and is now doing just special occasion and wedding cakes by order and appointment only.
When I got engaged I checked out some other places as well, but once I met with Amy (the owner) I knew this was the place.
We came in and spent a good deal of time talking, designing, and (the best part!) EATING a lot of yummy cake. Amy easily answered all our questions, came up with a cake design which was exactly what we wanted and was just so easy and fun to deal with. I never felt rushed, which was especially nice after some of the wedding cake 'factories' we had also been to.
She was also able to make a couple individual cakes for a couple of guests that can't have gluten or dairy, they looked just like the wedding cake and really made my guests feel special.
As a suprise, my bridemaids also got my shower cake from there, and it was fantastic, shaped like the yacht we were going to take our honeymoon on - just simply a work of art. Everyone loved it.
The wedding cake was like the sketch she made for us come to life. We decided to have different flavor on each layer, and guests raved about it. My only complaint is that my guests went back for second - even thirds! and we didn't get to eat any that day except for the peice we fed each other. Luckily we had decided to keep the top tier, and we went back to the honeymoon suite with a bottle of champagne and the cake and had our own celebration.

Small and cute but not very child friendlyHippie Chick Bakery appears to be huge from the street. Once inside, however, it turns out to be almost uncomfortably cramped. Two small tables (and a total of six chairs) are pushed against the front window, and the rest of the “customer area” is taken up by the sizable beverage station and displays of gifts (such as maple syrup, garden signs, and dog treats) and t-shirts.
The other reason to stay away from this bakery with small children is that it just wasn’t very clean. I felt squeamish as my 10-month-old son leaned up against a display case – the glass looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in a while. The five-second rule definitely does not apply here.
The prices were reasonable: I paid $4.65 for a small cup of coffee, a bottle of water, a muffin and a cookie. The large specialty cakes and tarts were generally around $15-20, and they were beautiful. They offer an extensive list of specialty cakes, and request 48 hours notice for a special occasion cake. Dairy, egg, and gluten free are a specialty, as well as other food allergies. I asked about a sugar-free, 'healthy' cake for a child's first birthday, however, and was given a firm 'no.'
