hodgie's ice cream photoThe opening of Hodgie's Ice Cream, usually in early- to mid-April, is a sign in the Merrimack Valley that summer is around the corner. The small, unassuming structure on Route 110 in Amesbury is suddenly surrounded, day and night, by cars and lines that stretch into the parking lot.

Hodgie's is famous for two things: selection and serving size. Its ice cream menu includes regional favorites such as Grapenut, buttercrunch and banana; classics such as chocolate chip, M&M, French vanilla and cookies & cream; and a revolving selection of specialty flavors, including ginger, grasshopper and Kahlua chip.

All ice creams are made on the premises, but the soft serve frozen yogurt is made elsewhere. Also available are floats, frappes, lime rickeys, strawberry shortcake, sundaes, and the colossal Hodgie's Special.

Hodgie's ice cream cones are known for being gigantic: the 1/4-kiddie is only the second smallest size available. A one-scoop serving costs $3.30, and even that size is still at least two cups worth of ice cream!

In case ice cream isn't enough of a meal for you, the window on the far right side of the building serves burgers, fries, fish sandwiches and hot dogs. The servers (honor students from the area) are friendly, helpful, and good at math: all orders are taken and totals calculated on pads of paper!
