Others to Consider: Cool Licks Creamery, Cold Stone Creamery, JP Licks, Erikson's Ice Cream, Herrell'sGram's is a seasonal establishment in downtown Newburyport, offering homemade ice creams, frozen yogurt, and desserts such as strawberry shortcake. Compared to other local ice cream parlors, the treats aren't cheap, but there are few summertime pleasures comparable to strolling the streets of Newburyport (or escaping the summer heat!) with an ice cream cone in hand.
Twenty flavors of ice cream are available, including local favorite 'Plum Island Turtle' (vanilla ice cream with caramel, chocolate chips and cashews). 10 flavors of frozen yogurt include 'Joppa Sludge' (coffee yogurt with Heath bar, nuts and Oreos). Also available are soft serve ice cream, sherbet, slushes, sorbet, frappes (over 10 flavors), egg creams, floats, and sundaes. Gram's is for dessert purists: no sandwiches or even chips are sold. For a larger appetite, homemade strawberry shortcake, apple crumble, and brownie sundaes are suggested.
To share Gram's ice cream with those at home, hand-packed quarts, pints and gallons can be purchased; as can 'doggie sundaes': vanilla ice cream with dog biscuits!
The serving sizes are on the small side, but true: 'one scoop' is actually one scoop, and it will run you $2.95 after tax. Two scoops cost $3.80; three cost $4.60. Sundaes and 'special desserts' go up from $5.00.

Not Worth The Trip, Wed 27 Aug 2008
I do not understand why people rave about the ice cream; it is fine but nothing to write home about. I also have noticed the prices going way up, which is understandable, but the quantities have gone way down. There is also a very limited selection. Further, the staff is Steve the owner and a group of teens who can be quite slow and truly seem to skimp on the already smaller portions. Additionally, I had a customer service issue the last time that I was there and Steve was not in, the teens were borderline rude. A place around the corner now sells Anabelle's ice cream; that seems to be a much better bet.
