This restaurant is packed with academic patrons, but it is no upscale Cambridge eatery. Rustic murals and tapestries liven up the decor and salsa music entertains the diners on Friday and Saturday.
Savory moles and salsas kick the award-winning regional Mexican fare up a notch. Zesty entrees include pork chops with an orange chipotle sauce and grilled fresh fish. Most dishes can be prepared as vegetarian upon request.

You Call This Authentic?, Sat 15 Nov 2008
Okay, I was very hopeful when I moved into the neighborhood and heard all the great things about Forest Cafe. I ordered the mole, a big mistake! I might as well been eating a green salsa with Hershey's chocolate syrup drizzled in it. It was without a doubt the worst mexican food I have ever eaten and there is nothing there that could even resemble authentic mexican food.
Great Mexican Food!, Wed 1 Jun 2005
There is an Authentic Mexican Food Restaurant that is literally unknown in the BOSTON area. It is located at 1682 Massachusetts ave. in Cambridge. It is in the Forest Cafe. Great Food,Great Service, and very friendly atmosphere. I highly recommend this restaurant for truly AUTHENTIC Mexican delicacys. Reasonably priced menu. I live on Cape Cod and travel to Cambridge about once a month and go out of my way to pleasure my palate at the Forest Cafe. It is centrally located between Harvard Square and Porter Square.
I love this place!, Wed 1 Jun 2005
I went to the forest looking for a good burrito and what I found was so much more!! The mole was so authentic, I never thought I would find mexican like I could back home in California, but this is the real deal! I am a convert for life. I love the decor too, it is vibrant and interesting, with an authentic flare... They have music and a fun youngish crowd...I love this place!
