Manhattan it ain't, but students, business people, and techies flock to Sammy's basement for a wide array of deli sandwiches and salads.
Not much can prepare you for the unexpected pleasures of Manhattan Sammy's Deli. After all, a classic New York deli in the shadow of MIT and some other high tech neighbors is totally out of place, but what a welcome oddity, indeed!
The menu is displayed on the wall, with daily specials, sandwiches, soups and side dishes written in. All the familiar deli delights are there from corned beef, pastrami and brisket, to bagels and lox. Classic New York sides such as creamy cole slaw and a tasty potato salad with just enough mayo, are available, as are thick, home style soups like mushroom barley and split pea. You get a yummy dill pickle with your sandwich to boot.
The sandwiches are stacked high on a tasty rye bread. There’s also good mustard to slather on it. The side dishes are generous enough to share.
As for the decor, the walls of the dining room are studded with black and white photos of, what else, New York’s lower east side, making the nostalgic trip even more so.
