In June, public libraries across the Commonwealth will kick off their summer reading programs designed to help readers of all ages explore new lands, cultures, and interests.
Participants choose their own books, track progress online and feel a sense of achievement.

Additional details on summer reading, including registration, are available at local libraries and their websites. Find a Massachusetts library near you.

Benefits of summer reading include:
• Skill maintenance and improvement: reading over the summer helps kids maintain skills they’ve learned over the academic year and grow towards the skills required for the next school year
• Test score improvement: children and teens who participate in summer reading programs show an increase in
vocabulary scores on standardized testing and an increase in comprehension scores
• The fun of reading for pleasure:participants explore current interests and discover new subjects by choosing what they want to read
• Recognition: participants set goals and track their progress online to earn a certificate of completion (many earnprizes/passes to attractions across the state)
• Participation in the programs is free of charge
Great Prizes from the Boston Bruins:
As a returning sponsor, the Boston Bruins will once again provide prizes for children and
teens selected from a pool of candidates who demonstrate outstanding reading involvement.

TIPS↑ top

  • Often times, kids lose some of the reading skills they have learned and worked hard on over the school year. It is SO important to continue reading and keeping those skills sharp! We hope we can help with that by offering this wonderful summer reading club. It will allow them to focus on a daily or weekly reading goal, earn AWESOME Usborne books in the end, and help children in local family shelters who are less fortunate than ourselves. All non-readers are welcome too! They simply need to be read toi! Reading is something we need to do with our kids every day. Why not have more fun with it??
