Here, the Industrial Revolution comes alive through hands-on activities and programs.
In the 1820's, Lowell became an industrial powerhouse, importing farm girls from New England's rural villages (and later, poorly paid immigrants) to live and work in the city's mills. You can gt a taste for that time period at the orientation film in the visitor's center. In its play ara, kids can weave, play with gears and pulleys, and read children's books about the era.
The nearby Boott Cotton Mills Museum has a kids' Discovery Trail, where kids punch time clocks, don aprons, and try hands-on activities - such as spinning and carding wool - as they wander through the historic mill.
In the summer, families can tour the park by vintage trolley or cruise through canals in a boat. You'll also see an 1840's boarding house where the mill girls lived. The park sponsors mny special family oriented events, including the Lowell Folk Festival and Canal Heritage Day.
