Who Was Thornton Burgess?
Burgess (1874 - 1965) wrote 170+ books and 15,000 stories, loved by children worldwide, about Peter Rabbit, Jimmy Skunk, Grandfather Frog, and many others. While Peter Rabbit was created by British author and illustrator Beatrix Potter, Burgess noted, 'I like to think that Miss Potter gave Peter a name known the world over, while I ... perhaps made him a character.' These engaging stories taught generations of young people about the natural world and the importance of conservation.
Green Briar Nature Center has numerous year-round natural history and science programs for children and adults, including drop-in naturalist sessions, story hours classes, field trips, guided walks, workshops, vacation programs, scout program and nature-related birthday parties. Check the website for current events.
There is a wildflower garden and trails cover the 57-acre Briar Patch Conservation Area. The Library has a collection of books, periodicals and other materials on the natural history of the Northeast.
Green Briar's historic Jam Kitchen offers frequent classes for all ages. Learn to make jam, candy or seasonal treats.
The Thornton Burgess Museum features a variety of memorabilia including books, toys, games, and household goods that feature some of Burgess’ most famous characters. Outside the museum, stroll the Tussie Mussie herb garden and enjoy the beautiful views of Shawme Pond.
Both facilities have gift shops featuring Green Briar Jam Kitchen products, educational toys and games, storybooks, and Cape Cod goodies.

Fun spot, good class, Tue 3 Jan 2012
My daughter and I took a candy-making class here while we were visiting Cape over the holidays. It was really fun -- we cooked in a big antique kitchen, and she learned to use a candy thermometer. The property is very quaint and we also enjoyed walking the trails. I look forward to trying some other classes in summer.
