Birthday Party At Whimsy, Wed 14 May 2008
I could not have been happier with my daughter's 4 year old birthday party at Whimsy! The staff was wonderful- they knew every child's name from the minute they walked in the door (all 11 of them!) and did a great job running the party. All I had to do was bring paper products, and they took it from there- they had pizza, cake, and the kids had a blast painting bird/bug houses and playing in the play area. The adults who came got to sit back and relax- how often can you say that with a group of 4 year olds?! I will definitely be going back- what a wonderful day!
Annual Tradition, Wed 16 Nov 2005
We live in Surrey, British Columbia and have been coming to Whimsy since they opened. We have so much fun there, it's something we look forward to and has become quite a tradition in our family. The studio can get noisy and may appear disorganized but that's due to the open architecture. We've found the staff to be very knowledgeable and helpful but not pushy or 'in your face'. I appreciate the fact that we can take our time and aren't rushed through our projects in order to free up a table. A lot of the new craft places have a cookie-cutter approach to their 'art' - you just copy their example and are in and out pretty fast. At Whimsy, we appreciate the staff's encouragement to experiment at our own pace. Main point I want to make - is that my daughter absolutely loves Whimsy. She's in high school now and her projects have grown with her. The open environment and choice of so many different kinds of projects/materials - certainly sparks her imagination! She's happy because her art reflects her creative inner spirit rather than her ability to copy a 'tried and true' craft project. We definitely look forward to our trips to Framingham and afternoons at Whimsy. Have heard there's a ladies night for adults, but so far I haven't had a chance to check it out. Maybe next year!
Depends On Who Is Working On A Given Day, Fri 7 Oct 2005
We've visited several times. My 6 and 7 year old daughters love it. Once when we visited we were the only ones in the place, but there was a teenaged girl working who ignored us & spent most of her time sitting down and chatting on personal phone calls. I had to ask for her help at each stage of our projects, and each time she really seemed to do the minimum and then go back to chatting on the phone. On another occasion it was very busy, but the young woman working still checked in with us on a regular basis to make sure we were all set, even though she was the only one working. My girls have been to several birthday parties there and they really enjoyed them. The parties seemed very easy on the host parents, and it was easy for guests' parents to sit nearby while the party was going on. Two comments -- expect it to cost a lot more than a visit to Plaster Fun Time, and I've never actually seen anyone up in the refreshments area, either working or eating. It's always been dark and has seemed closed.
Funky Atmosphere, Personable People, Cool Projects, Sat 12 Feb 2005
I have been to several birthday parties at Whimsy and I really love it here. This place is very funky looking and really caters to the individual. Yes, they are not especially organized, but they are also not a drone franchise. These are a couple of energetic ladies who really put their heart and soul into putting together a fun, creative place for kids. They have a wide variety of projects in my opinion, most involve paint and wooden or paper objects, ranging from heart boxes to treasure boxes to doll houses to drums. They also have mosaic projects that look really cool, but my kids are not that coordinated yet. My daughter loves painting and is only 2, and they were very nice to give us some paper and let her paint to her heart's content on paper when she really didn't do too well on a structured heart box project - we were waiting for her older brother who was at a birthday party. They have a play area with playhouses and kitchens and dolls that she liked playing in and a chalkboard. They have a gold panning area that my son loves, he is 8 and actually not really into crafts, but he likes mining for fools gold and the other rocks he finds when he pans in the water. His projects from birthday parties are nicer than the projects from the parties at plaster funtime, they are boxes that he has used to hold his little belongings. Also, my daughter accidentally made a big spill of paint and the ladies were very nice about it. They also allow parents to stay at the party and socialize and have a little cafe area, and the host parents usually bring snacks and coffee etc, which is much better compared to Plaster funtime where they pretty much require you to leave when you drop your child off even if your child wants you to stay. They also have a cool gift shop that has a selection similar to childrens museum - gifts, lots of creative and educational types of toys for kids. Definitely give this place a chance, especially if you like places with personality! Debbie from Natick
I'd Second The Review Below-what A Mess, Wed 17 Nov 2004
I brought my six year old twins expecting something like Plaster Fun Time. This is a noisy, disorganized, room that seems to have nobody working. There are now several places where kids can paint that are much better managed and frankly much cheaper as well. Maybe we got them on a bad day.
My First Impressions, Thu 14 Oct 2004
I recently visited Whimsy with my children and I was disappointed with the limited selection of crafts (and the high prices). Everyone was in one big room and it was very chaotic. No one acknowledged our presence and, material and supplies were stacked in every corner (very unattractive). I've been to better craft centers.
My Kids Had A Blast At Whimsy, Sat 27 Mar 2004
We spent several hours at Whimsy and my two boys (ages 3 and 7) had a great time. They panned for precious stones and built/painted a project. While we were there, a birthday party came in with about 10 kids and all of them were having fun as well. It's a wonderful place that I recommend to anyone with children.
