Scott Benner is a talented artist.

He is also homeless.

He will be displaying his entire lifetime portfolio at the MakerBot Retail Store on September 18, in what will be his first solo show.

The event will also showcase MakerBot’s 3D printing technology in the 3D printing of some of Scott Benner’s intricate black line artwork, which will be made into custom 3D printed phone cases and will be available for purchase Scott Benner became homeless a year ago after several decades of working as a heavy equipment operator in Massachusetts.

His company closed in 2009, and he has since struggled to find a new job as a middle- aged man.

After years of job search, in 2011 he was diagnosed with Horner’s syndrome, a rare condition that causes cluster headaches, confusion and exhaustion.

When Scott was forced to sell his house in June of 2013, he found himself on the street.

Over the last year he has lived on the streets during warm Boston summers and in shelters during the harsh winters.

Right now he is living in the woods.

Through his hardships though, he has never lost his creative passion and has continued working on his art.
Benner noted that his art is a little like 3D printing.

“I get attracted to a shape or pattern and spend a lot of time pushing it repeatedly over again.” That process of drawing an image over and over again is a similar process to 3D printing, but instead of pen and ink, a MakerBot® Replicator® 3D Printer uses fused deposit modeling technology and draws a design over and over again with MakerBot PLA Filament, creating a physical object out of a digital file.

“I’m a simple twist of fate.

That [phrase] ties in a lot of what has been going on for the last year,” said Scott Benner.

Despite the challenges that Scott has faced, he is confident that he can build a brighter future for himself.

Aptly put by Scott, with another twist of fate, this former construction worker is turning his lifelong hobby -- drawing -- into a source of income.

Scott joined ArtLifting this past spring to sell his artwork – from small, 5” by 7” intricate ink drawings to larger, equally intricate 4’x 6’ pieces.

Scott’s abstract, black line drawings have caught the attention of many fine artists in the Boston area, including professional artist Stephen Prina and Harvard’s director of the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, James Voorhies.
