Griffon vultures soared over ancient Minoan Zakros as they do today, nesting in small caves along the steep gorge walls that cut into the landscape throughout Crete.

In spring, Bee-eaters and grey herons migrate north from Africa over the ruins at Phaistos, across the fertile plains of Mesara as they did 4,000 years ago when civilization thrived under Minoan rule.

Over 600 named and countless un-named gorges carve through this island only 160 mile long by 37 miles at it’s widest mid-way between Africa, the mid-East and mainland Greece.

The many stories about Crete were thought to be myths until just 100 years ago when Sir Arthur Evans accidentally discovered that Knossos and its labyrinth are real.

Excavations of Minoan palaces continue, proving many of the stories to be actual fact.

The rugged topography, proximity to Africa, Europe and the mid-East contribute to a rich culture and nature.

In addition to resident and migrant birds, fields of wildflowers cover inter-mountain valleys including the endemic orchids, tulips and more.

Mass Audubon’s first trip to Crete was in 2014.

The next is planned for April, 2016.
