Taking Back Childhood: Helping Children Thrive in Challenging Times

Childhood has changed dramatically in just one generation.

Life has become fast-paced, media and technology are now significant forces in children’s lives, messages from consumer culture surround our kids, and schools have become increasingly focused on testing and academic skills, even in the early grades.

Taken together, these influences tend to undermine the basic building blocks of a healthy childhood.

It becomes harder for children to develop their creativity and their capacities to learn and to relate meaningfully to others.

But while this is so, we adults can still do many things to restore the best of childhood for our kids.

We can support healthy, imaginative play, nurture children’s sense of security, and take many steps that will help children build positive, loving relationships with peers and families.

As we do this, we will reclaim for children what they are too often losing out on, and help them to flourish even in these challenging times.

Nancy Carlsson-Paige is a child development expert and professor emerita at Lesley University; she is the author of Taking Back Childhood: A Proven Roadmap for Raising Confident, Creative, Compassionate Kids.
