Children will be able to sit at and view the inner workings and mechanics of a true 'Baroque' organ--It promises to be a memorable event for everyone! Stay for an authentic German lunch at 12 Noon in our fellowship hall ($12 lunch fee).

A full day of workshops, discussions and concerts in honor of Johann Sebastian Bach’s 325th birthday are planned for March 20th in the heart of Boston’s historic Back Bay. Emmanuel Music and the First Lutheran Church of Boston will celebrate the birth of the great Baroque composer by enlisting the talents of revered musicians from around the world to perform his most famous works.
All concerts and workshops are free and open to the public.
At the First Lutheran Church of Boston, a full day of programming centering on their magnificent Richards, Fowkes & Co. Opus 10 Tracker Organ will be presented.
10:30 am - Guy Bovet’s ‘Peep the Piper’ a multi-media story about the pipe organ for children, followed by an organ recital with Bálint Karosi, First Lutheran Church of Boston (11:30)
Noon - Luncheon in First Lutheran Fellowship Hall (Ticketed event - $12; reservations required).
1 pm – 5 pm - Organists from around the world present 30 minute recitals of all-Bach programming (this is an open house, so audiences are invited to join the event throughout the day): Nancy Granert, Emmanuel Church, Boston (1:00); Frank Corbin, Assumption College, Worcester (1:45); Christopher Lane, Harvard Memorial Church, Cambridge (2:30); Mark Dwyer, Church of the Advent, Boston (3:15); Luca Massiglia, Torino, Italy (4:00); and Colin D. Lynch, Concord, NH (4:45).
5:30 pm - ‘Organ Fireworks’ showcases Bach’s most famous organ works. Presented by James David Christie, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Organ Department Chair Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and College of the Holy Cross, Worcester.
At Emmanuel Church, Emmanuel Music presents a full day of master classes, followed by a discussion and performance of Bach’s cantata “Am Abend aber desselbigen Sabbatas” (BWV 42).
2:30 pm – 5 pm - Emmanuel musicians, John Harbison, Acting Artistic Director; Michael Beattie, Associate Conductor; Peggy Pearson, oboist; and Frank Kelley, tenor will hold a master class with invited student ensembles. The public is encouraged to attend.
7 pm - Bach’s cantata “Am Abend aber desselbigen Sabbatas” (BWV 42) will be the centerpiece of a discussion led by John Harbison; Pamela Werntz, Rector of Emmanuel Church; and Rabbi Howard Berman, Boston Jewish Spirit.
8 pm - Performance of Bach Cantata BWV 42 by the Emmanuel Music chorus and orchestra, with the Boston Children’s Chorus. A reception follows the performance in Emmanuel Church’s Parish Hall.
The Boston Bach Birthday 325 celebration is a collaboration between The First Lutheran Church of Boston, Emmanuel Church in Boston, Emmanuel Music, the Boston Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, the Boston’s Children’s Chorus, and Winsor Music.
