The 2-act opera draws on a variety of popular and classical styles of music and will appeal to audiences of all ages. NCFOC will perform this light-hearted jaunt through the galaxy on the weekends of March 12/13 and 19/20, 2005 at King Open School in Cambridge, MA.
'Don't be put off by the term 'opera,'' suggests Bass, who founded NCFOC in 1999 as a way to involve his young family and their friends in music. 'Opera is just a story told by singing and acting, with little or no spoken dialogue. Our productions are fast-paced and engaging for both adults and children, on and off-stage. We don't do Viking helmets,' asserts Bass. 'This is your chance to experience an entertaining, audience-acclaimed opera sung in English by performers of all ages.'
The SPACE OPERA cast and crew consist of one hundred and forty soloists and chorus members drawn from eleven local Massachusetts communities. Participants are a mix of seasoned and novice performers ranging in age from seven to seventy. Assisting musical director David Bass in this production are North Cambridge dance teacher and choreographer Deborah Mason of the Deborah Mason School of Dance, and set designer Dale Senechal, former technical director of the Boston Opera. All participants are volunteers, as is Bass, who studied music at Yale and MIT before beginning a career in chemical engineering.
