The first annual Merrimack River Maritime Festival has tall ships, educational activities, fireworks on Saturday, a live concert and the 1st Annual Maritime Chowdah Challenge & BeerFest.

See the Spirit of South Carolina, a 140 foot replica of an 1879 two-masted schooner; the Roseway, a 1925, 137’ National Historic Landmark fishing schooner, which remains one of only six original Grand Banks Schooners; and the Tall Ship Mystic, a 170 foot three-masted ship that calls Mystic, CT home.

The Ships are Coming! Visiting Hours & Maritime Festival
Salisbury Beach Partnership, Inc. is proud to host three class A and B vessels on the Merrimack River. See the 170-foot Tall Ship Mystic, 150-foot Spirit of South Carolina, and the 137-foot Schooner Roseway.

10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Learn About Life Aboard a Ship with the Crew of the Schooner Ernestina
Currently undergoing renovations, the ship Ernestina can’t sail up to Salisbury this year, but they’ll be on land! The crew from Ernestina will teach event-goers about life aboard a ship, and give lessons on knot-tying. They’ll also distribute signal-flag tattoos for the entire family.

10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Pirate Fun with Free Men of the Sea
These exciting pirates will re-enact sword fights, sing sea chanteys, and pose for pictures throughout the day. They’re well schooled on the rich pirating history off the shores of Salisbury, and can answer your pirate questions. No worries, they’re not real pirates, so your jewelry is safe!

10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Custom House Maritime Museum
The folks from the Custom House Maritime Museum will be displaying gear and equipment used by the Coast Guard. Guests will have an opportunity to touch, try on, and learn about the equipment that the Coast Guard uses, and what life is like in the USCG. Newburyport is the birthplace of the US Coast Guard.

USS Constitution Museum
“David’s Story” is a re-enactment of life aboard the USS Constitution during the War of 1812. It’s relies on crowd involvement, so be prepared to be thrown into the action! They’ll perform the re-enactment three times on Saturday and three times on Sunday (times TBD). What’s more, their booth will teach the basics of deck-scrubbing, and knot-tying, and they’ll display clothes similar to those worn by sailors on Old Ironsides. If you’re lucky, you can even try them on!

Lowell's Boat Shop
Lowell’s Boat Shop is the oldest active boat-building shop in the United States. Today they proudly manufacture Dories and send these special vessels across the country. They’ll be exhibiting models of the boats they build, as well as the equipment they use to build them.

See the largest fireworks display north of Boston as they are launched from a barge just off Salisbury Beach. Enjoy breathtaking views from the Beach Center as you watch the sky light-up over the Atlantic Ocean to celebrate the Maritime Festival weekend. FREE
