In 2009, 25,000 runners will compete in the Boston Marathon, the world's oldest annual marathon and one of the world's most prestigious road racing events.

With the American Cancer Society's Charity Runner program, qualified runners are able to make their miles more meaningful by dedicating their efforts to the fight against cancer, and in honor or memory of a loved one.

To be a Charity Runner in this marathon you must already have been given a race number by the Boston Athletic Association. Charity Runners agree to raise a minimum of $1,000 for the American Cancer Society, $750 of which is due by race day.

In return for their fundraising efforts, Charity Runner participants will receive many benefits, including:

Personalized Web site to assist in fundraising efforts
Free local training
Exclusive American Cancer Society racing shirt
Personal Web page to enhance your fundraising efforts
Opportunity to dedicate your participation in memory or in honor of a loved one touched by cancer
The American Cancer Society's mission as a nationwide community-based voluntary health organization is to eliminate cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service.
