During the season, which consists of three main productions and four, two-week summer programs, the opera has fifty performances.
The Program
Boston Children's Opera is a program for singers in grades 2 through 9. The opera has seven different casts that each rehearse once a week—you choose a cast and attend once a week at that time. Available cast times are Monday through Friday, 4:00-6:15 pm, Saturday, 1:00-3:15 pm, or Saturday 3:15-5:30 pm.
To participate, singers must have strong reading ability. There are no auditions, but singers should have good singing voices. Each singer receives a cassette tape of the music for rehearsing at home and is expected to review the materials for at least 20 minutes daily in order to learn and memorize their role for the 2 hour show. Each cast presents 2 performances of the opera.
The Operas
All operas are composed by Artistic Director, David Budgell, utilizing classic operatic style of ensemble, aria and recitative. The operas are based on fairy tales and popular stories. David Budgell's operatic masterpieces are written to be performed by and for children.

BCO Is Wonderful!, Tue 5 Jun 2007
My 8-year-old twins were in two different productions with Boston Children's Opera this year. They both had a great time and became much more self-confident about getting up on the stage in a production. They also made friends. In particular, the people who run BCO, David and Jenni, are terrific with the youth and really do a lot to encourage them. I cannot recommend this highly enough!
