On Saturday, April 18, Mudflat Studio & Pottery School will host the second annual Empty Bowls event, a benefit to support Food for Free, a local nonprofit which works to rescue fresh food and bridge the gap between waste and want.

Since 1981, Food For Free has responded to local hunger by rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste, and distributing it to local emergency food systems such as food pantries, youth programs, shelters, and more.

As one of the nation’s first and oldest food rescue programs, Food For Free, feeds more than 25,000 families annually in Boston and beyond.

Upon arrival, each guest will choose a locally handmade ceramic bowl in which they will fill with helpings of local artisan soups.

Soup, bread and beverages will be provided by local businesses, including Craigie on Main, Cuisine En Locale, The Hong Kong, UNO Harvard Square, Highland Kitchen, the Neighborhood, Vinny’s and more.

Soup will also be provided by Harvard University Dining Services to celebrate the new Prepared Foods Rescue partnership with the institution in which Food for Free rescues prepared meals from 14 Harvard Dining Halls.

The handmade bowl is each guest’s keepsake, to serve as a reminder of worldwide and local hunger issues.

Empty Bowls will take place on Saturday, April 18, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Mudflat Studio, which is located at 81 Broadway in Somerville.

Tickets are $20 per person and $50 per family of up to five people, and must be purchased in advance.

For information or to purchase tickets, visit www.foodforfree.org.

About Food For Free

As one of the nation’s first and oldest food rescue programs, Food For Free, a local nonprofit, feeds more than 25,000 families annually in Greater Boston and beyond.

In 2014, Food For Free rescued and delivered more than 1.3 million pounds of fresh, healthy food, which translates into three nutritious meals for over 900 people every day of the year.
